Five things to know before you start applying!

Indeed, Monster, LinkedIn, and Workopolis are a few popular job sites where you can find jobs and apply. However, you’ll find the same jobs listed on multiple job sites.

In my experience of applying to jobs in Canada, you are most likely to receive a call from the recruiter: if you have the same job title in your previous job role (industry, domain, competitor, etc.) or have expertise in the exact product/service lines as the job you’re applying. Else, it gets challenging.

Though we know companies have different job titles, such as Marketing Program Manager, Marketing Portfolio Manager, or a generic Marketing Manager, the recruiter is often drawn towards the matching job title.
Follow some of the below tips in that situation.

1. Make a list of all the competitor companies, of companies you have worked for in the past.
2. If you think the job responsibilities are similar to what you have worked on in your previous jobs, change the title accordingly, and when you get to speak to the recruiter, clarify it in the first place.
3. If you see the same job posted on multiple job sites, upload a different version of your resume across those job sites. For example, for a Marketing Manager role with company ABC advertized both on Indeed.ca and Monster.ca, apply with different resumes.
4. It is imperative to have a strong cover letter and a resume to stand out from the crowd. (Stay tuned for another blog post on writing cover letters)
5. Try other job sites like Eluta, ZipRecruiter, GrabJobs, Robert Half based on your profession. (Again, I’ll publish lists based on different disciplines soon)

These are just a few tips to get you started on the right note. As a word of caution, you tend to apply to multiple jobs with the same resume. Doing this will do more harm than any good, as if it gets picked up by the recruiter and finds it not up to the level, you would have lost the future chances.
